The residential blocks are another job entirely: the neighborhood is built on an actual ridge, and a car that will not hold on a Shore Road cross street is a different recovery from one sitting flat on 4th Avenue.

The Verrazzano approach
The ramps at 92nd Street and Dahlgren Place feed straight onto I-278 and the bridge, and none of them have a shoulder worth the name. A breakdown there is a lane closure, so we position the flatbed to shield the car before anyone gets out. Tell us your direction — Staten Island-bound or Brooklyn-bound — because the two are reached from different sides, and we run over the Narrows regularly enough to know which.
The hills toward Shore Road
West of Colonial Road the cross streets drop steeply toward the water, and a car with a failed parking brake or a dead transmission on that grade needs to be secured before it is winched. We approach from downhill, chock it, and load from below. It takes a few extra minutes and it is the reason nothing rolls.
Under the Gowanus on 3rd Avenue
From about 65th Street north, 3rd Avenue runs beneath the elevated expressway with steel columns down the middle and the light of a parking garage. A flatbed cannot raise its deck under the viaduct, so a car stopped there comes out on the wheel-lift, or we walk it to a side street first.
