Does every borough drive the same thing?

Each borough has its own page with its own top fifteen, and each one names the model that sits furthest from where the citywide list puts it.

No. The Honda CR-V is the most registered model in 3 of the five boroughs, and the Toyota RAV4 leads in Queens, and the Nissan Rogue leads in Staten Island. Manhattan is where the lists diverge furthest down: the Land Rover Range Rover is its seventh most registered model and only 38th citywide.

Which single model year of which car is most common?

The 2023 Tesla Model Y is the most common single year, make and model in New York City, with 7,566 active registrations. That is a different question from the model ranking above, which counts every model year of a car together.

Active registrations by model year, make and model. Where the model year on the registration and the year encoded in the VIN disagree, the registration is used.

What do these numbers not tell you?

A registration is a record in a state database, not a car on the road. The borough is where the registrant receives mail rather than where the car is driven, fleet vehicles are often registered at one company address, and a model name was identified for 2,102,828 of the 2,124,852 active registrations, leaving 22,024 counted at the make level only.

The full list of limits, the filtering rules, and what the VIN decoder can and cannot read are on the methodology page. It is worth reading before quoting any figure here.
